J.M. “Johnnie” Burnett
Burnett served as Executive Director of the Arkansas Activities
Association from 1946-1974 and was instrumental in building a sound
activities program for high schools in the State of Arkansas.
He was elected into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 and
the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995.
He was a member of the first National Federation Track &
Field Rules Committee.
Andrew Butler
As head coach of the Pine Bluff High School Zebras, Butler led his teams
to 10 state track & field championships.
During the decade of the 1980’s, Pine Bluff captured 8 of 10
state track & field championships including four in a row from
1985-88.
Gerald Cound
Cound was the first NAIA national champion for University of Central
Arkansas, winning the 1962 NAIA 880 yard run in 1:51.3.
A week later, he ran the fastest half mile ever by an Arkansan,
posting a 1:50.3. Cound won
the Venezuela National Time Trials in 1:49.0, the fastest 800 meter
performance ever in that country. He
competed in two A.A.U. national championships and finished 5th
in the 1967 semi-final 880 in 1:50.3.
He was head track & field coach at Hendrix from 1969-75 and
was selected NAIA District 17 Coach of the Year one time.
Joe Falcon
Falcon was one of the most versatile distance runners in NCAA history,
winning seven individual NCAA national championships over distances from
1500 meters through 10,000 meters while representing the University of
Arkansas. He was a member
of the Razorbacks world record setting distance medley relay team in
1989. Falcon set a
collegiate record of 7:46.42 in the indoor 3000 meters in 1989 and
posted other personal bests of 3:35.42 for 1500 meters and 28:34.20 for
10,000 meters.
Ivan Grove
Grove was one of the first inductees into the Arkansas Sports Hall of
Fame. Grove was born in
Denver, CO and came to the state to coach at the University of Arkansas.
He joined the staff at Hendrix College in 1924 where he remained
until his retirement. Coach
Grove was an all-conference college athlete in football, basketball,
baseball and track & field and brought his love of athletics into
his coaching.
Jerry Hall
Hall served as the Associate Director of the Arkansas Activities
Association from 1970-1996. He
served twice on the National Federation Rules Committee from 1974-78 and
1986-90. In 1995, Hall was
among the first inductees into the Arkansas High School Coaches
Association-Arkansas Officials Association Hall of Fame.
Wadie Moore
This Little Rock native has served Arkansas athletics through the media
four nearly four decades. He
covered high school sports for the Arkansas Gazette for 25 years before
becoming sports editor of the Pine Bluff Commercial.
He is currently Director of Public and Media Relations for the
Arkansas Activities Association.
