At Dorking, in the County of Surrey, is the only surviving House in England that belonged to one of the "Mayflower Pilgrim Fathers". William Mullins was born in Dorking, in 1572, and became a very prosperous shoe-maker. In 1612, he bought a large house in West Street, now numbers 58 = 61. It is uncertain why he decided to sell up and emigrate to the New World but, in 1620, he and his wife Alice and two younger children, Priscilla and Josheph, joined the "Mayflower" at Rotherhithe and sailed to America. William, Alice and Joseph all died at New Plymouth in the winter of 1621. Priscilla married the Mayflowers cooper, John Alden, and together they founded the neighbouring town of Duxbury. They went on to have 11 children and their descendants include the poet Henry Longfellow, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams and Vice President Dan Quayle. Priscilla was immortalised in Longfellows poem, "The Courtship of Miles Stanley. If you would like more of this kind of English/American history, let me know. The Ancient Brit

Good day to you, sorry about the delay in replying, but have been rather busy, pleased you enjoyed my little remarks on you early history, I know from the many requests that I get from my friends on your side of the Pond, they are cheerfully accepted. As to me, well, I live right in the middle of the Pile, IE: Covent Garden, from my roof I can see, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliment, along with most of the great sites of my City. As to Lakenheath, well I did a couple of times, for my sins, dine at the Officers Mess, found it rather stylish. Also pleased you enjoyed my country, aint a bad place really. Cheers, The Ancient Brit.

Thank-you for your reply, well I do hope that the Good Fairy hears your wish and decides to grant it, as to where your husband is posted, given that he may have some choice (as long as it aint Afganistan), I would suggest Italy, brilliant, and the weather is better, so much history and style, Hope to be over next year to L/R, to have another go at the marathon, should be the first over 80. Best wishes. The Ancient Brit.
